How to get more Google reviews for your auto repair shop

September 25, 2026 · 5 min read

When someone searches “mechanic near me”, your star rating and how many reviews you have decide whether they call you or the shop next door. Most happy customers will leave a review. They just need to be asked at the right moment, with a link that makes it take ten seconds.

In short
  • Ask every customer, the same way, soon after they pick up.
  • Send your direct Google review link so it takes ten seconds.
  • Never offer anything in exchange for a review.
  • Reply to every negative review calmly, and move the details offline.

1Why steady reviews matter

Customers look at three things: your rating, how many reviews you have, and how recent they are. A shop with 40 reviews from this year looks busier and more trustworthy than one with 200 reviews, the latest from 2022.

A steady trickle beats a one-time push. Aim for a few new reviews every week.

2Ask at the right moment

The best time is right after the customer pays and drives away happy, while the visit is fresh. Later that day or the next morning works well.

  • After the invoice is paid, not before
  • Within a day of pickup
  • Once per visit, not a string of reminders

4Keep the message short and personal

Review request text
Thanks for choosing Main Street Auto today, Dave. If we did right by you, a quick Google review really helps a small shop like ours: [your review link]

Use the customer’s name and your shop’s name, say thanks, and put the link last. That is it.

5Stay inside the rules

Things that can get reviews removed
  • Offering a discount, gift or entry to a draw for a review
  • Only asking customers you know were happy
  • Writing reviews yourself, or having staff or family write them

Ask everyone the same way and let the reviews be honest. A few mixed ones make the good ones more believable.

6Answer bad reviews the right way

A calm reply to a bad review is read by every future customer who sees it. It often matters more than the review itself.

  • Reply within a day or two, and never in anger
  • Thank them, and say you want to make it right
  • Keep the details offline: give a name and number to call
  • Do not argue the facts or share their private information in public
Reply to a negative review
Hi Karen, thank you for the feedback, and I am sorry the visit did not go the way it should have. I would like to make this right. Please call me directly at 905-555-0123. Tom, owner

7How this works in Moibay

Add your Google review link in Settings and turn on review requests. After a customer pays an invoice, Moibay sends them one short review request by text and email with your link. You can edit the wording, and the same customer is not asked again for 60 days.

Questions shops ask

Can I give customers a discount for leaving a review?

No. Google’s review policies do not allow offering incentives for reviews, and doing it can get reviews removed. Just ask, and make it easy.

Can I only ask the customers I know were happy?

Google does not allow selectively asking only happy customers for reviews. Ask everyone the same way. A few honest mixed reviews also make your good ones more believable.

Where do I get my review link?

In your Google Business Profile, look for the option to ask for reviews or share a review form. It gives you a short link that opens the review box directly.

Should I reply to every review?

Reply to all the negative ones and as many of the positive ones as you can. A short thank-you is enough for good reviews.
